General:

The only airport in Hong Kong located on reclaimed land on the western side of the city. The airport opened in 1998, replacing the infamous Kai Tak airport in Kowloon

Appearance:

Despite being nearly 30 years old the airport looks almost new with large airy spaces and lots of room and light.

I have not arrived on a domestic flight at this airport

After landing it was a short walk up the jet bridge and into the terminal before heading down into the shuttle area to take the transit train back from the gates to the central area where you then clear immigration and customs.

Immigration was very smooth and efficient.

Baggage reclaim was large and spacious and bags came up pretty quickly after arrival

Customs were present but only observing at the time of visiting, once through customs it's straight out into the arrivals hall

The MTR Airport Express runs regularly into the centre of Hong Kong via Kowloon taking about 30 minutes. Alternatively Airport Express buses serve a large number of points in the city and may be quicker than the MTR if you need to change lines.

The check-in area covers most of the upper floor of the terminal with large open spaces and many rows of desks. After check-in its through to the large and spacious security area and then immigration both of which were very quick and efficient. Once through passport control you are into the main departures hall which has a large number of shops and food outlets. For lower numbered gates it’s a (at times lengthy) walk to the gate, for higher numbered gates the transit train will take you part of the way - or you can chose to walk all the way from the central area.

Many options both landside and airside

Pretty much a full shopping mall inside of the departures area with everything from Duty Free and local gifts to high end designers

The toilets were all spotless
