General:

The largest airport on the Spanish Med coast, catering for the millions who head to the Costa's for the sun, sea, sand and not for the Spanish Culture!

Appearance:

The airport has the look of one that has been expanded many times over. The central building looks quite dated from the outside when compared to the gleaming glass extensions on either end. Inside it is modern, though there are areas which look as though they could do with an upgrade. At the time of visiting the final touches were being put to the new terminal which opened the day after I left. At this point the oldest parts of the building closed.

The runway is located surprisingly close to the main terminal building, so it is a very quick journey from coming off the runway to pulling up at a gate. Straight up an air bridge into the terminal building, and then a long walk along dimly lit corridors until you finally reach the two immigration desks. Wasn't particularly great when there was just the one flight from the UK landing, I can imagine this gets unpleasant when there are several all coming in at once as they do during the summer. Through Immigration and down a floor to the massive baggage hall, no real sign of any customs point as you walk out into the main arrivals hall

There were just two desks for all non-schengen arrivals. Both desks were dealing with all passports (EU and non-EU) so the queue from one flight was quite long.

A massive baggage reclaim hall.

I could not identify any customs area, but there must have been one!

There are buses from outside the terminal building into the city centre, alternatively there are half hourly trains, though the station is about 10 minutes walk away, through a car park!

After checking in you walk behind the desks to the security area and then through into the departures lounge. The airport was undergoing heavy refurbishment, ready for the opening of the new terminal the following day, so large parts were closed off. From the departures lounge it’s a fairly long walk to the gate rooms.

A small food court (most of it closed when I visited) once you are through security

A few shops after security, again most things were packing up preparing to move the following day.

The toilets are clean and well maintained
