General: |
The main international airport for Greece |
Appearance: |
A modern airport, constructed in advance of the 2004 Olympics. Still in good repair and easy to get around |
Domestic
On arrival you are bussed from the plane back to the terminal building. It's then quite a walk through the gate area on the lower floor of the B wing to get to the baggage reclaim hall and then through into arrivals
International
From the air bridges it's a short walk down into the immigration hall which then opens out into the large baggage reclaim hall. Customs is quite a small area and is a combined space, the entrance way you use dictating if you are EU, Nothing to Declare or Declaring
Immigration was quick with lots of staff on duty
Baggage reclaim hall was large and well lit, bags came round quickly
Small customs area
There are half hourly metro services to the city centre, taking around 45 minutes, alternatively there are regular buses that take around 60 minutes
Domestic
Domestic and Schengen zone departures leave from the B wing of the airport. After checkin you go through security screening into the large departures lounge from which the gates all come off of - a separate set of gates for smaller and domestic flights is located on the floor below. As there are only a couple of air bridges most flights require a bus from the gate to the plane
International
Large and spacious check-in area slightly spoilt by all the flights that were checking in at the same time lumped together on neighbouring desks causing some queues to become mixed. As my journey was to a non-Schengen destination I went to the A wing of the terminal which requires passing through passport control first and then a security screening area before reaching the main departures lounge.
A couple of café/bars landside and a few more airside
