General:

Located in France, Paid for by the Swiss and now also serving Germany this is a very odd airport, with options to exit to any of the three countries avoiding the others

Appearance:

The airport, in places, looks a little dated but is in generally good condition.

On arriving, despite being in France, you are met by Swiss immigration officials on the border. From the large baggage hall you exit either into France, Germany or Switzerland

Despite being in France the immigration control is run by the Swiss authorities - or at least on my flight advertised as to Basel this is the case, it may not be the same if your flight is advertised to Mulhouse. ***2022 update*** with the UK now no longer part of the EU passport checks are more thorough than they were and this means that even with only a single plane load of passengers the queues can quickly build up. At nearly 11pm it took over 30 minutes to get through Immigration

The large baggage hall has several carousels. On exiting the baggage hall you have to choose whether to exit into France/Germany via the Red, Green or Blue channels or exit into Switzerland via the separate Swiss Red and Green channels

You make a choice as to whether you wish to go through French Customs to exit into France for connections onto Germany or to exit through the Swiss Customs to exit into a bi-state area that extends down to the actual physical border with Switzerland around 2KM down the road.

There are regular number 50 buses from the Swiss side of the airport into Basel city centre. Anyone staying in a hotel will receive a free Basel Mobility card that gives free transport on the city network - including the airport - proof of hotel reservation allows you free transit into town from the airport. There are regular buses from the French side of the airport to Freiburg taking around 50 minutes to make the journey.

The checkin hall is divided into four separate halls each with their own security area and entrance into the airside part of the building. After passing through security and into the large duty free shop you get directed to different parts of the terminal depending on whether you are travelling to another Schengen state or not. For non Schengen members there is a Swiss immigration post before the gate area

Several cafes, bars and restaurants both air and landside.

A couple of shops landside, a large duty free shop and a few smaller shops airside

The toilets are clean and well maintained
