The smaller of the two international airports on Crete, serving the western end of the island. |
Appearance: |
The airport has clearly undergone recent renovation with the whole building looking well cared for and modern, despite the terminal not being new. As I visited here just after the Covid-19 travel restrictions were being lifted the airport was very quite and therefore spacious for the few passengers using it. I could imagine that the airport can get very cramped when a full flight schedule is operating. On the positive side there is very good air conditioning inside the terminal |

International
After landing you walk across the apron to the arrivals doors - for non-Schengen customers its through passport control/immigration and then down into baggage reclaim. From the baggage reclaim area it's a short walk out to the arrivals hall.
Immigration was speedy and efficient, even with the addtional Covid-19 checks being conducted
The baggage reclaim area is quite large with several belts arranged along the length of the hall. Bags came round quickly after arriving down from immigration
There was no distinct customs area, rather a corridor you pass through from baggage reclaim to Arrivals where there were a couple of staff standing around
There are irregular buses from the airport into the centre of Chania.

International
There is a large checkin area with lots of desks available - though that may have been more noticable as mine was the only flight checking in at the time. Once through security you are into the main departures lounge, with about 10 gates all in an open space. There is then a separate passport control area for non-Schengen flights. Beyond here there are a couple of small gate rooms and a small cafe and shop
