General:

Small airport, surprisingly so for such an important city.

Appearance:

Cape Town airport appears to be in the middle of a refurbishment with the air-side of the airport (everything after security and passports on departures and before customs on arrivals) being all sleek and modern and the land-side part of the airport looking slightly tired and dingy

Planes park up along the length of the terminal building requiring either a walk or bus to the immigration hall. Although visa's are not needed to visit South Africa, and I was only transiting, immigration takes a long time!

Partly caused by the fact that 3 full 747 loads landed within minutes of each other and most not being South African citizens there were very long queues in immigration and it took about 45 minutes to get through. The staff were thorough but very polite and efficient.

The one distinct advantage of taking 45 minutes to get through immigration is that your luggage is waiting for you when you get to the large baggage hall

For such an important city I was expecting a much bigger customs hall, but you are through it in a matter of seconds!

As I was only transferring in Cape Town I never left the airport.

After checking in in the rather dingy check in area you walk through security to the departures lounge where there are several shops and cafes. The design is very light and open and pleasant to sit in.

There is a large cafe/restaurant overlooking the air field on the land-side and several small cafe's on the air-side

There is a large cafe/restaurant overlooking the air field on the land-side but no restaurants on the air-side, there are several cafe's that sell food though.

Several shops on the land-side of the airport before you even reach the check in desks. There are a large number of shops once you are through into the air-side of the airport.

The toilets are very clean and well maintained, though it is impossible to get anything other than sandpaper in the toilets anywhere in Southern Africa! (I know there are considerably more pressing matters for the countries of Southern Africa than the quality of their toilet paper but it don't half hurt to us pampered Europeans!)
