General: |
One of Germany's main hubs for international and regional flights |
Appearance: |
A modern airport with lots of high roofs and light |
Domestic
I have not landed from a domestic flight at this airport
International
On arrival you come up the air bridge into the main departures lounge, then it’s a short walk to the immigration desks and on through into the large baggage reclaim area, then its through a short customs hall into the arrivals hall
All outgoing and incoming passengers mix in the departures lounge, to exit you have to pass through the immigration desks
There is a large baggage hall which is very spacious
One of the larger customs halls I have been through, with several officers standing around
There are two stations connected to the airport. Düsseldorf flughafen terminal has regular S7 S-Bahn trains back to Düsseldorf. Alternatively Düsseldorf flughafen station is on the main line and has direct trains to Cologne and beyond
Domestic
I have not flown domestically from this airport
International
The check-in area is massive, with high roofs and lots of natural light. Passengers are separated into Schengen (no passports needed) and non-Schengan destinations before walking through a large security screening area with several x-ray machines, a passport check and then out into a massive departures hall that runs the length of both terminals. The gates all come off from here
There are several cafés, bars and restaurants both landside and airside

Dusseldorf appears to have taken the BAA approach to airports, i.e. a shopping complex which also has some flights leaving from it
The toilets are clean
