General:

The main airport for islands of Madeira and San Porto, located on one of the few flat areas of the island, to cope with modern planes the runway has been extended out over the sea on hundreds of concrete pillars.

Appearance:

At the time of visiting the departures area was undergoing major renovation and the airport was a mess with virtually no facilities

From the plane you are taken by bus less than 15 meters to the immigration hall, which is a bit ridiculous. From immigration it's through into the large baggage reclaim hall. Customs is basically choosing which door you wish to take out of the baggage hall as they all lead to the same lobby in front of some more doors out to Arrivals

Several desks open with very short queues, in addition a set of ePassport gates helped speed passengers through

A large baggage hall, albeit with most of it in darkness as we were the only flight for some time.

A short corridor with no sign of any staff

The Aerobus runs from the front of the building into the centre of town and onto most of the main hotels. The bus runs at irregular times and takes around 25 minutes to get to the centre of town.

The checkin area was quite spacious with a large number of desks, though three UK bound flights were all posted to neighbouring desks making the area round those very busy. Once through security the whole airport is undergoing major refurbishment and there are very few facilities and not much space. There are no air bridges and most of the steps aren't covered so if you are boarding during a (frequent) shower you will get wet.

Very limited facilities due to the refurbishment - two small food/drink outlets airside

None

One large duty free shop and a couple of smaller shops

The refurbished toilets are clean and in good shape, but in areas which are yet to be refurbished they were poor
