It was a smooth flight in from Helsinki, and unlike the arrival from London, assistance was ready and waiting once we’d landed. Once again on a remote stand so we had to wait for all the other passengers to disembark before we were extracted through the tiny front right door of the Embraer jet – this door is a lot smaller than any airline door I’d ever used before. Assistance through the airport was quick and we soon had bags and mums walker off of the baggage belt and were able to head towards the S-Bahn station.

Our hotel was located close to a U1 station, so rather than catching the S-Bahn all the way into town and trying to change at the chaotic Hamburgh Hauptbahnhof we instead got off after one stop at Ohlsdorf where the S1 and U1 lines connect just outside the airport and changed onto the U-Bahn there. It was a lengthy and dull journey, but did mean we weren’t trying to board a pretty busy train in the centre of the city.

After checking in and dropping off our bags we headed back into town taking the U1 train back to the centre of the historic city centre at Jungfernstieg where we went to the Alex restaurant on the edge of the Binnealster lake. Whilst the chain restaurant is relatively modern its housed in the historic Alsterpavillion. A food establishment of one form or another has been on the site since the end of the 18th century, though the current building dates from the early 1950s.
