Å (i Lofoten); Sunday, 03 May, 2026

The final approach down into Leknes was pretty impressive, if a little hair-raising as the plane appeared to be very high considering I could see the runway not that far ahead of us and at about 45 degrees, the pilots then did a sharp turn and dive, I can only assume avoiding mountains, and a few seconds later we were firmly on the ground and taxiing to the terminal, pulling onto stand a full 5 minutes early.

The bags only took a couple of minutes to come round, so I now had 50 minutes to make a 20 minute walk into town, which turned out to actually be closer to 15 minutes, meaning by the time I got to the bus station I had about 30 minutes to wait, just enough time to grab a Pølsen from the Circle-K petrol station as my original plan had been to have dinner on the ferry.

The bus arrived a few minutes late, but as it had a 20-minute stop in town that didn’t really matter. It also appeared that not very many people wanted the service as there was probably less than 10 of us on the bus by the time it departed.

It was a very scenic hour and forty-minute drive south down through the lower islands of the Lofotens. We reached the ferry quai at Moskenes on time, at which point my journey was fully back on track to where it should have been.

It was then just a short drive the last 10 minutes or so onto Å, by the time we got there I was the last person left on the bus, and it turned out that the whole village was very quiet with almost nobody around as I walked the short distance to my hotel for the night.

The reception and restaurant were both closed on Sunday and Monday, so I had to pick up my key from a drop box, but the instructions were pretty clear, and it all worked perfectly so I was quickly up in my room and dropping my bag off.

After quickly freshening up I headed back out of the hotel and went for a long wander around the village, taking the reasonable decision that if I waited for the snow showers to stop, I wouldn’t see anything, and in the end, I only spent half the time getting wet.

I saw pretty much all of the village and spotted where the museum was as that would be open from 10am the following morning, giving me about 30 minutes to look around it before I would need to get the bus. I then headed back to my room to dry off and relax for the rest of the evening.
