General:

Very very large airport covering a massive area, and acting as one of Europe's main hubs (along with Frankfurt and Heathrow)

Appearance:

Inside a modern and sleek building with lots of light and room, the buildings from the outside look considerably older

After a very taxi from the runway (at least 10 minutes) and then a long walk from the gate (about 10 to 15 minutes) you finally reach the departures lounge, then down a flight of stairs to the immigration desks. These lead straight into the massive baggage reclaim hall (about 24 belts). From there a short walk through a very small customs corridor leads you out into the arrivals hall.

After a long walk from the plane you finally reach immigration, who in the case of anyone with an EU passport were just waiving through!

The baggage hall is massive, with about 25 belts, and four separate exits

In contrast to the rest of the airport, the customs hall is very small, and when I went through, deserted

Regular trains run from the airport to Centraal station, taking about 20 minutes

The massive check in areas give you the fist idea of the size of the airport. There are some 30+ zones, each zone with at least 10 checkin desks. After walking through one of the many passport control desks you reach the enormous single departures lounge for all customers. To walk from one end of the lounge to the other takes well over 20 minutes, similar length walks occur to get to many of the gates. Security checks are carried out at the entrance to each departure pier, so instead of everyone going though a single point (which causes delays at most airports), its only the people who have actually been called to the gate who have to go through.

Several dotted all around the place, both on the land side and airside

Large numbers of shops located in the main departures lounges, with several small shops located at the start of each block of departure gates

The toilets are quite clean, though the one I use whilst transferring on the way back was quite messy
