General:

The largest and busiest international airport on Continental Europe (Though Heathrow would beat it if the UK was connected to the rest of the continent!)

Appearance:

The airport appears to have been expanded in stages with the original 1950's/60's buildings now making up terminal 1, divided into 3 separate areas A, B & C. A new terminal building Terminal 2 (divided into two areas D & E) has been added on at the end to provide extra space. The older building is looking a little tired but appears to be in the process of refurbishment.

Terminal 2 is the newest terminal at the airport and it looks as though it has only just opened. The whole terminal is very light and airy with lots of glass and high ceilings. From the plane you walk through to the immigration hall and from there into the cathedral like space that is baggage reclaim. From there you go straight out into the main arrivals hall. The major drawback is that the signage is a little confusing with too much of it (if that is possible.) From Terminal 2 it is a short ride on the sky train to Terminal 1 and the central station.

Lots of immigration officials and the queues were dealt with very quickly.

The baggage reclaim hall, like the rest of the airport is massive with over 10 belts. Unlike other large airports (not naming any names here - Heathrow) the area is light and airy and despite the number of people and bits of baggage does not feel claustrophobic.

Located at the far end of the baggage reclaim area they only have a very small space, but did have staff at each entrance.

Terminal 2 is connected to Terminal 1 by a sky train (monorail.) Terminal 1 itself also houses a large train station with regular trains back to the central station (Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof) and on through the city as part of the Frankfurt S-Bahn network. There is also a large coach station directly outside terminal 1

The theme of light and airy is continued through the departures area as well as arrivals with a large check-in area with several shops and a small food court. Once through security the area around the gates is open and bright, though you do have to go through about 3 security checks to actually get onto the flight!

There is a food court on the land side of the airport and a small restaurant/bar/cafe once you are through security

The toilets are clean and well maintained
