General:

The main airport for the region (Lower Saxony) located about 20Km outside of the city.

Appearance:

Strange shaped airport which has been built in stages. The exterior of the airport is very 1970's!! The way the airport is designed is peculiar in so much as all the gates have their own set of check-in desks, security, passport and immigration desks and baggage reclaim belts!

As soon as you come up the air-arm you hit the immigration desks and once through them you descend stairs into the baggage reclaim hall. There is a belt for each gate so your bags come round on the same number belt as the gate you landed at. At the end of the baggage reclaim hall there are just a couple of doors, one the red customs door, the other green and blue. With no staff around it wouldn't have made any difference!

Almost at the top of the air-arm you hit the immigration desks which then lead you back down stairs to the baggage reclaim hall.

The baggage carousels match the gate (i.e. you land at gate 9 your baggage comes round on belt 9) so the bags come through very quickly

You have the choice of doors, they all take you directly from the baggage reclaim hall into the land-side of the airport, and there were no staff around even if you did want to go through the red door!!

The airport has it's own train station which is the end of the S5 S-Bahn line. Trains run every 30 minutes into the main station.

The setup at Hanover is very strange. Before you can check-in you have to put your hold baggage through a security scan. It's then tagged as security passed and then you walk round some screens to the check-in desks. Each gate has it's own passport check, security check and shop all in the same small area!

None, though all of the Cafe's/Restaurants on the land-side also sell alcohol.

Couple of small cafe/restaurants on the land-side. Nothing on the air-side

Couple of small cafe/restaurants on the land-side Nothing on the air-side.

A couple of small shops on the land-side and one tax free shop selling alcohol, sweets perfumes and cigarettes in the gate area.

The toilets, where they were working, were clean and well maintained.
