General: |
One of Germany's major airports, and a hub for the region |
Appearance: |
Following major reconstruction after my first visit the airport is now a modern and spacious building. Beyond security there is just the one terminal building, with the different terminal numbers only reflecting the location of the checkin desks and security screening area |
Domestic
I have not flown domestically from this airport
International
After landing the plane parked a long way out on the air field and then it was a bus trip into the terminal and the three immigration desks, the desks lead straight into the baggage hall and from there its a short walk through the deserted customs hall to the arrivals hall
Immigration was quick and efficient
The baggage hall is massive, but well signed. The bags came round quite quickly
The customs hall was deserted when I walked through
S1 S-Bahn trains run every 10 minutes from the airport to the centre of Hamburg taking around 20 minutes to make the journey. On trains heading back to the airport you must be in the front half of the train as they split at the penultimate station with the rear portion not serving the airport
Domestic
I have not flown domestically from this airport
International
From the large and light checkin area you walk through security to the main departures lounge, which is shared between both terminals. Consequently, many of the gates are a long walk from the central area. A lot of the gates do not have air bridges and you have to catch a bus out to the plane.
Lots of Café's, bars and restaurants all over the airport

Like many of the major airports, Hamburg more closely resembles a shopping mall with the planes as an after thought
The toilets are clean, though there don't appear to be very many of them!
