General:	The main airport for New York and one of the main gateways into America. Terminal 7 is operated by British Airways

Appearance:	Unlike its shiny counterparts in Europe the airport terminal is dark, cramped and feels very dated inside

On landing its down some dark and dilapidated corridors to the immigration hall and from there through to the small baggage reclaim area before exiting into the arrivals hall

The immigration hall is quite small, with very low ceilings making it feel oppressive and very cramped. On a cold April night the area was quite warm so must be very unpleasant on a hot summers day. Immigration was a lengthy process, but not too bad compared to some of the horror stories you hear, I was through in around 25 minutes.

There are just a couple of elderly baggage belts that creak and groan round with the luggage

Immediately behind the luggage belts are staff from customs checking the customs declarations and then deciding if they want to pull people over for checks.

The air train runs regularly to several subway lines. Journey times into the city centre take about an hour

International
The Check-in area is quite cramped with not many desks for the various airlines. Immediately past the desks is the small security screening area, which was struggling to cope with even the handful of passengers who were going through when I was. From security it's up a short escalator to the departures lounge off of which all the gates are located.
