General:

The main airport for New York and one of the main gateways into America. My first flights through Terminal 8 were just a couple of weeks after British Airways had moved to the terminal from their old home in Terminal 7 as part of a partnership arrangement with American Airlines, which had included a complete refresh of the terminal so inside was effectively a new terminal

Appearance:

As the terminal had only recently been refurbished it felt much more modern than my previous experince in Terminal 7. The terminal is light and airy with lots of space, though still limited seating and very few options landside.

Domestic
I have not arrived on a domestic flight at this airport

International
On landing its down some dark corridors to the large immigration hall and from there through to the small baggage reclaim area before exiting into the arrivals hall

The immigration hall is of a reasonable size, but I was one of the first off of a flight and there hadn't been any arrivals for a while so it was completlely empty when I got there, I could imagine it filling up quickly if a couple of flight landed together. Unlike my previous visit to New York Immigration was very quick with a friendly and welcoming border guart - not like the horror stories that still exist of JFK border experiences. I was through in under 5 minutes.

Immediately behind the immigration desks are 4 baggage carousels in quite a spacious hall so there was plenty of space for everyone to gather round the belt

Immediately behind the luggage belts are staff from customs though they didn't appear to be doing much more that waving people through - though I'm assuming they were keeping an eye out for people to pull over.

The air train runs regularly to several subway lines. Journey times into the city centre take about an hour

Outbound

Domestic
I have not flown domestically from this airport

International
The Check-in area was quite spacious and open, but at peak times I could see it getting very busy as in the evening there can be about 10 flights between AA and BA to London leaving within a couple of hours of each other, along with all other AA departures as this is their main New York terminal. Immediately past the desks is the small security screening area, which was struggling to cope with even the handful of passengers who were going through when I was. From security it's straight out into the spacious departures lounge

There are a couple of bars airside, there is nothing landside

There are a couple of cafes airside, but nothing landside

A few restaurants airside, nothing landside

There are a couple of small shops both landside and airside, and unlike many other aiports they are located away from the security area so you don't have to go walk through a duty free shop just to get to the departures lounge

The toilets are clean
