General:

The main airport for France's 3rd largest city and the wider region. At the time of visiting Terminal 2 had been closed for renovation and refurbishment, following the completion of an expansion to Terminal 1 which had created the space to allow the terminal to close. Once completed the refreshed airport will be much more modern than the currently dated parts of the terminal look

Appearance:

Most of terminal 1 is in a new circular extension that opened within the last couple of years of visiting. In general the terminal is light and airy with lots of space

Inbound

Domestic
I have not arrived on a domestic flight at this airport

International
On landing you enter the terminal building and, as we were on a gate towards the end of the semi-circle that they occupy, walk quite a distance to the immigration hall. Once through immigration it's down to the large baggage reclaim hall and then out into arrivals via a short customs hall

Immigration was speedy and efficient

The large baggage reclaim hall has a number of belts and feels quite spacious

There is a small customs corridor at the end of the baggage reclaim belts before you exit into the arrivals hall

There are regular trains from the airport to Lyon city centre, taking about 30 minutes to make the journey. There are also direct TGV services to Grenoble and Pairs.

Check-in occupies half of the lower part of the terminal (the other half being baggage reclaim on the arrivals side). Due to the curve of the building there is quite a decent amount of queuing space coming back from each desk as the desks are arranged around the centre of the curve. It's then up an escalator into the security area that sits directly above check-in and from there through into the departures hall which occupies much of the 1st floor of the building, accessed via the large duty free shop. For non-Schengen flights you have to go up another floor and through passport control to the gates, though note there is nothing more than some toilets and a couple of vending machines once through passport control

Several cafes, bars and restaurants once airside, but stay in the main departures area and don't go through passport control if you are leaving on a non-Schengen flight as there is nothing beyond passport control

One large duty free shop that starts at the exit to security and takes you into the main departures hall

The toilets were clean and well maintained
