General:

London's 3rd airport and the furthest from the centre. Also the place where hijacked planes are sent!

Appearance:

Stansted was completely rebuilt in the 1990's and the new airport building is light and airy. One large structure passes you through on the same level from arrival to leaving for your gate.

Inbound

Domestic
Arrivals for international and domestic flights are the same (bypass channel to avoid immigration for domestic arrivals)

International
Arrival is the same as departures but in reverse. Depending on the part of the terminal you arrive in it is either the monorail, bus or a long walk back to the main part of the terminal building.

Quite a small area with one gate for EU passports and another few desks for other passport holders. When there are lots of people coming through the EU gate it is quicker to be a non-EU passport holder!

For the size of the airport quite a large baggage reclaim area though it needs to be when you fly Ryanair as it takes them over 45 minutes to get your luggage the couple of hundred yards from the plane to the terminal building.

Large customs hall and on all occasions that I have been through the airport, totally deserted

Frequent train services leave from the train station directly underneath the terminal building, though they take 45 minutes to get you to London Liverpool Street. There is also a coach station attached to the airport and coaches leave from here to large parts of Britain

Outbound

Domestic
Departures for domestic and international flights are the same

International
Traditional layout of departure desks back to back in lettered rows. There are a large selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants before passports, security and duty-free. The departures lounge again is light and airy with a couple of shops and bars/cafes. There appears to now be three distinct parts of the terminal. The main part is reached by a monorail link. A slightly newer section is reached by a long walk and there are still further bits that can only be reached by bus.

One bar on the land-side of the airport is matched by one very large bar on the air-side in the departures lounge.

Several cafe's on the land-side of the airport and a few more in the departures lounge on the air-side. Further cafe's are located in the area near some of the gates.

Three main restaurants on the land-side of the airport and further restaurants on the air-side of the terminal.

Lots of shops on the land-side of the airport are matched by yet more on the air-side of the terminal.

The toilets are very clean and well maintained.
