Database Overhaul

Monday, 09 November, 2020

Back in lockdown, so I've taken the opportunity to do some long needed housekpeeing on the database that runs the site

When I originally started the site I coded each trip with a six letter code made up of a prefix for either UK, EU or WO (rest of world), the two letter ISO country code and then a two letter code for the location.

Over the last 18 months I've started to have to get more creative with the codes as in some locations (in particular both German and English places beginning with B) I'm running out of letters, so I've been on a recoding exercise that meant changing every record and every linked record across the database (somewhere in the region of 50,000 changes across the database)

You'll now see that each location has an eight letter code with, for most places, a region inserted below the nation level (e.g. Munich went from eudemu for EU, Germany, Munich to eudebymu for EU, Germany, Bavaria, Munich). This should provide enough codes to be going on with until I'm well past the point I can travel any longer!

It does mean that if you've bookmarked a link on the site it may well have changed and you might need to amend your links.
